ROSEBANK WRITERS JO'BURG

 

Rosebank Writers Jo’burg (South Africa) is a vibrant group of fiction and non-fiction writers – essayists, journalists, article writers, poets and academics who meet several times a year to:

  • keep our writing projects on track. 
  • give each other some concise feedback. 
  • gain more knowledge about writing techniques, editing, publishing, etc. from industry leaders. 

Rosebank Writers Jo’burg is a branch of Rosebank Writers Cape Town which had its first meet up on 16 July 2022. Rosebank Writers Jo’burg’s first meet up was on 12 August 2022 at The Winston Hotel in Rosebank, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Rosebank Writers Cape Town was founded by:

  • Nancy Richards – founder of Woman Zone, an NPO and The Women’s Library at Artscape. Her memoir, The Skipper’s Daughter, was published in 2021.
  • Dr Karina Szczurek – author and the founder of Karavan Press. One of her books is Truer than Fiction: Nadine Gordimer Writing Post-Apartheid South Africa.
  • Dr Kim Gurney – writer, researcher and visual artist who has published several books, e.g. Panya Routes: Independent Art Spaces in Africa.
  • Professor Leslie Swartz – professor of psychology and author of How I Lost My Mother: A Story of Life, Care And Dying.

Rosebank Writers Jo’burg was founded by: 

  • Shams Essack – MA Journalism and Media Studies (Wits), corporate communications consultant, digital marketer, executive and business coach, non-fiction writer who believes that everyone should write a book! Managing editor of Memories of Maru-a-Pula: The First 20 Years, 1972 – 1992, and contributor. Winner of an ANFASA AGSA grant to write a non-fiction book, which is currently a WIP. 
  • Lynn Joffe – copywriter, producer and storyteller, graduated with an MA (Cum Laude) in Creative Writing from Wits in 2017. She is the author of teh bestselling book, The Gospel According to Wanda B. Lazarus.
  • Lorraine Sithole – reading activist, Vice-Chairperson of the International Board on Books for Young People South Africa, founder of the Book Worms Book club and a writer, longlisted for the 2017 Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award and has contributed to these books – Black Tax and When Secrets Become Stories edited by Sue Nyathi. Lorraine was the programme manager for the South African Book Fair and is the founder of the Gauteng International Book Fair.
  • Arja Salafranca –  former editor of Sunday Life, Independent Newspapers for 13 years, has had several books published and won the Sanlam Award for poetry for A Life Stripped of Illusions published in 1995.
  • Joanne Joseph – TV and radio host and author of the best-selling non-fiction book, Drug Muled: Sixteen Years in a Thai Prison and historical fiction best-selling book, Children of Sugarcane (10,000 copies sold) which was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Literary Award for Fiction in 2022.

Ronald, writes training manuals and does his own writing for 30min, from Monday to Friday and has completed a fiction manuscript. His WIP is a film script. 

Tharuna is a creative fiction writer, a screenwriter and won a place at screenwriting workshop in Germany. She is a former creative writing lecturer and journalist at The Witness.

Nzumbu, a lawyer, writes from 3am to 5am,  from Monday to Friday. She is editing her 80,000 word fiction manuscript and a children’s book. 

One of our members, Busisiwe Hlatshwayo MBA (2nd from L),  had a chapter in the book, Real Life and Business Minds, recently published (April 2023). Read Chapter 4!
